Building Wealth as a Family: Teaching Kids About Money at Every Age

July 08, 2025

Financial habits are often passed from one generation to the next, making it essential to talk about money at home. Teaching your children about saving, spending, and investing from a young age sets the foundation for lifelong financial confidence. And when your family grows together financially, you build more than wealth. You build wisdom and stability for future generations.

Start Young: Ages 3–7

Even young children can begin to grasp the basics of money. Use a clear jar for savings so they can see their coins build over time. Play pretend store or bank to make learning interactive. Teach them that money is earned by completing tasks and that not all wants are needs.

Middle Years: Ages 8–12

Introduce allowances and encourage children to split their money into spend, save, and give categories. Let them make small spending choices and experience the outcome. Start discussing family budgeting and show them how you plan for things like groceries, entertainment, and bills.

Teens: Ages 13–18

At this stage, kids can start managing a bank account and using a debit card with guidance. Encourage part-time jobs and discuss taxes, saving for college, and budgeting for personal expenses. Begin talking about compound interest and the value of long-term investing.

Young Adults: College and Beyond

Help your young adult understand credit, student loans, and building an emergency fund. Now is a great time to help them open an IRA or learn about employer-sponsored retirement plans. Reinforce the value of living within their means and avoiding debt traps.

Families who talk about money early and often help kids develop strong financial habits that carry into adulthood. And building wealth as a family means working together to make smart, intentional choices.
